Average Payback

For a given hand, the average amount you win if you play that hand millions of times. For example, if a Royal Flush pays $1,000 and you draw one card to a Four Card Royal Flush, your average payback is about $25.

Average Payback is important because for any hand that you can play more than one way, you should always pick the play with the highest Average Payback.

Bonus Poker   Many Video Poker machines have larger payouts for some big hands. A typical example is a larger payout for Four Aces. Of course, there will be a smaller payout for some smaller hands to compensate. A common example is a smaller payout for two pairs. These machines are usually labeled with words like Bonus Poker or Double Bonus Poker.

Cash Out

Each Video Poker machine has a Cash Out button that causes one coin to be dumped into the machine's hopper for each credit that you have accumulated.

Comps

Short for Compensation, rewards that a Casino pays you for playing. To qualify for comps, join the frequent gambler's club (whatever it is called) at the Casino. They will give you a plastic card that should be inserted in the Video Poker Machine while you are playing. The Casino then tracks your play, and rewards you accordingly, providing you ask for your rewards. They include cash back, free meals, and free rooms.

Drinks (including beer and cocktails) are also free for players, but you don't have to join a club to get them.

Credits   The Video Poker Machine doesn't spit out coins when you win a hand. Instead it keeps track of the coins, and shows you how many Credits (one per coin) that you have accumulated. When you put money in the machine, you also add to your credits. For example, if you deposit $20 in a 25 cent machine, you will receive 80 credits. When your credits decline to zero, you have to put in more money to continue playing.

Denomination   The denomination of each card is its number from two through ten, or is Jack, Queen, King or Ace.

Double Inside Straight Flush
Three cards in the same suit in a broken sequence with two gaps or in a closed-ended sequence with or without gaps. Exactly two of the remaining cards in the deck will complete a Straight Flush.
Examples

Deuces Wild   A Video Poker Machine where deuces are wild cards.

Expected Return or Expected Value or EV   Other terms for Average Payback.

Flat Top   A video poker machine that does not have a Progressive Jackpot. So the Jackpot amount remains flat.

Flush
A hand containing five cards in the same suit.
Examples

Form W-2G (Internal Revenue Service)   If you win $1200.00 or more on a Jackpot at Video Poker (or any other game), then the Casino will present you with your winnings and an IRS form W-2G specifying the amount you won. They also send a copy to the IRS. If you keep track of your gambling losses, you may be able to offset your winnings. Check with your accountant.

Four Card Flush
A hand containing four cards in the same suit.

Full Pay Game   A video poker game where the Maximum Average Payback is near 100% (say 99.5% or higher). For example, a Full Pay Jacks or Better machine has a Maximum Average Payback of about 99.5%, and a Full Pay Deuces Wild machine has a maximum average payback of about 100.7%. Your total expected payback for any given game also includes any comps provided by the casino.

Garbage Hand
A hand where your best draw is to discard all five.
Examples

Hand
This term is used in more than one way. It refers to a collection of up to five cards. The cards you are dealt at the start of a game are your original hand. If there is more than one way to play your original hand, then each different way is also called a hand. You goal is to pick the hand with the highest Average Payback.
For example
There are three ways to play this original hand:
Keep the hand that is a Pair of Threes,
Keep the hand that is a Four Card Flush, OR
Keep the hand that is a Three Card Royal Flush.

High Card   A Jack, Queen, King or Ace. If you are playing Tens-or-Better Video Poker (there may be a few such games still around), then the 10 is also a high card.

Hold/Discard Buttons

Under the display on the video poker machine are five buttons, one for each card. You press these buttons to indicate which cards you want to hold and which you want to discard. Press a button repeatedly to switch between Hold and Discard.

Hunches and Superstitions   Playing hunches or adopting superstitions won't hurt you at Video Poker UNLESS they cause you to play a hand that doesn't have the best Average Payback. If you don't play the hand with the best Average Payback, you are giving money to the Casino.
As an example of a harmless superstition, many players switch to another machine after a losing session. This doesn't help your prospects, but doesn't hurt them either.

Inside Straight
A hand containing four cards not in the same suit in an open-ended broken sequence with one gap or in a closed-end sequence with or without a gap.
Examples

Inside Straight Flush

A hand containing three or four cards in the same suit in a broken sequence. See Three Card Inside Straight Flush and Four Card Inside Straight Flush.

Jackpot

This is the term to indicate one of the really big-payoff winning hands. For example in Jacks or Better and Bonus Poker, the Royal Flush is a Jackpot Hand.

Jacks or Better

The original video poker game, with a Pair of Jacks as the minimum winning hand. The Full Pay version of this game pays 9 to 1 for a Full House and 6 to 1 for a Flush. It has a Maximum Average Payback of about 99.5%.

Joker Poker

A Video Poker Game where the Joker is a wild card.

Maximum Average Payback

For a given Video Poker Machine Pay Table, the amount of payback per dollar bet if you play millions of hands on that machine, providing that you play every hand with correct strategy. It can be expressed as an amount per dollar bet or as a percentage (of each dollar bet).

For most machines, this number varies between 92 cents per dollar bet (92% payback) and $1.01 per dollar bet (101% payback). Obviously, you want to play the machines with the highest Maximum Average Payback, provided that you know a good strategy for the machine.

Maximum Average Payback's for every type of Video Poker Machine have been calculated by math and computer geeks, and are displayed on some Internet Sites.

Order of Cards in a Hand   The order that the cards appear in a hand doesn't matter except in the case of a Sequential Royal Flush. All other hands pay the same no matter what order the cards appear in.

Pat Hand
A winning hand that is dealt to you on the first five cards.
Don't assume that you should always keep a pat hand. Sometimes the Average Payback is higher to draw rather than keep it. For example, below is a pat flush where you should discard the three of hearts to draw to the Royal.

Payoff Table

By law, every Video Poker Machine must display the amount it pays for each winning hand for each amount bet. This is called the Payoff Table. Example:

Coins Bet 1 2 3 4 5
Royal Flush 250 500 750 1000 4000
Straight Flush 50 100 150 200 250
Four of a Kind 25 50 75 100 125
Full House 9 18 27 36 45
Flush 5 10 15 20 25
Straight 4 8 12 16 20
Three of a Kind 3 6 9 12 15
Two Pair 2 4 6 8 10
Jacks or Better 1 2 3 4 5

The numbers are the number of credits that you get if you draw that hand. For example, if you are playing five coins in a quarter machine with this Payoff Table, you win 4000 quarters or $1,000.00 if you get a Royal Flush.

Usually (as in the table above), you get more bang for your buck by playing the Maximum Credits.

If you know the payoff table, you can calculate (or look up in a book or on the Internet) the Maximum Average Payback for the machine. The best machines to play are the ones with the highest Maximum Average Payback, assuming you know the correct strategy for playing the hands in that game.

Play Maximum Credits (or Play Five Credits)

Each Video Poker Machine has a Play Maximum Credits button. This is the button you push to deal a new hand and bet the maximum. If you don't play maximum credits, you don't qualify for the big jackpots. On most 25-cent video poker machines, the maximum credits you can play is five.

If you are playing a machine (presumably with a high maximum average payout) with the intention of getting a Jackpot, then always play maximum credits. If you are sitting at the bar playing a machine with a lousy payout, then play the minimum, play slowly, chat up the bartender, and collect your free cocktails.

Progressive Jackpot

This is a Jackpot, usually for a Royal Flush that grows as players play. Several machines are linked together so that each bet at any of them increases the jackpot. When a player gets the Jackpot the Progressive Jackpot is reset to a starting value, typically $1,000 for a 25 cent machine with five coins played. Important: You can't win the Progressive Jackpot unless you Play Maximum Credits.

Quads   See Four of a Kind.

Random

It is required by law (at least in Nevada) that a Video Poker Machine must draw cards at random from a single deck. This means that no card is more likely to be drawn than any other. There is no rational reason for a Casino to try to cheat on this, since they can legally provide a Payoff Table that is lousy for the player.

Royal Flush
A hand containing Ace, King, Queen, Jack, and Ten in the same suit, in any order.
Examples

Sequential Royal Flush
A Royal Flush in order, either left-to-right or right-to-left. Some Video Poker Machines have a separate large jackpot for one of these. You will get one of these once in about two and a half million hands, so most of us will never get one. Still, it's possible, (we've met three people who have got one) and a lot more likely than winning the lottery.
Examples

Spill

When you win a hand that would put you over 1,000 credits, most video poker machines don't add to your credits. Instead they start spilling quarters into the hopper to pay off that hand. It's a noisy, happy occurrence, since it means that you are way ahead.

Straight
Five cards not in the same suit in an unbroken sequence.
Example

Straight Flush
Five cards in the same suit in an unbroken sequence.
Examples

Suit

In a poker deck, each card that is not a wild card is in one of the four suits: Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts or Spades.

Strategy Table   For each Video Poker Game, there is an optimal strategy that tells you how to play each hand that you are dealt. A Strategy Table is a list of the hands you might be dealt in decreasing order of Average Payback. If you can play a hand in two or more different ways, then you pick the highest in the strategy table - the one with the highest Average Payback.

Strategy Card

A Strategy Card is a Strategy Table printed on a card. It's a good idea to have a strategy card with you while playing. You can buy strategy cards for most any available video poker game on the Internet. With our Video Poker Wizard Coach software you can print a strategy card on your computer printer.

Three Card Double Inside Straight Flush
Three cards in the same suit in a broken sequence with two gaps or in a closed-ended sequence with or without gaps. Exactly two of the remaining cards in the deck will complete a Straight Flush.

Video Poker Machine

There are literally hundreds of models of Video Poker Machine. Broadly, these may be categorized into the types:

Jacks or Better
Bonus Poker - bigger payoffs for certain hands
Wild Card Games like Deuces Wild and Joker Poker

By law, the Payoff Table listing the payout for each winning hand must be posted on each machine.

Also by law, each machine must operate by drawing randomly from one deck of cards. There is no motivation for Casinos to try to cheat on the random draw, since there is no law against a Payoff Table with a lousy Maximum Average Payback (see below).

In a given casino, you will find a variety of video poker machine models, each with a different Maximum Average Payback. Most will be pretty lousy, and those with a high Maximum Average Payback will be few in number. (If you owned a Casino, what would you do?)

Winning Hand   A winning hand is one that you get paid for. For most video poker games the lowest winning hand is a Pair of Jacks. In Deuces Wild Video Poker, it's Three of a Kind.
